Subject:But which featured Art Carney AND Jefferson Starship, I ask you?

I regret that I was something of a late adopter of the Amazon wish list. It's a beautiful system. I spend the year packing it with obscure music and books, and then I get some of them for christmas from family members who would have never heard of these titles before in their lives. They give a great gift and I get a great gift (or it works in reverse), and Amazon pockets our money. Everyone wins.

As you may surmise from yesterday's post, I also now have a copy of the Star Wars Holiday Special (SWHS), which arrived in the mail on Monday afternoon. Truly a christmas miracle! Below I present a comparison between the SWHS, which I watched Monday afternoon, and It's a Wonderful Life, watched later in the evening. To make it fun, I won't tell you which column describes which, so you can try to guess:

Mystery Feature #1 Mystery Feature #2
Timeless allegory framed in context of modern life Low-fi variety show crammed into tenuously-related appearances by characters from a popular movie of the day
Selected for preservation by the National Film Registry Available only via bootleg copies of 6th-generation VCR recordings from 1978
11th on AFI's list of top films of all time Principal credited writer has allegedly stated: "If I had the time and a sledgehammer, I would track down every copy of that show and smash it."
Famous heartwarming scene of citizens donating money to save town patriarch Extended incomprehensible argument between mother and child Wookiee about doing the dishes
Received several Academy Award nominations Actress in lead (human) female role claims to have no recollection of performance and is widely believed to have been stoned throughout production
Included in canon of treasured American holiday classics Features Wookiee porn

I've never seen It's a Wonderful Life, but I have seen Holiday Special, so I'm saying Holiday Special is #1, Capra is #2. It is tricky, because Holiday Special also features Wookie Porn, but I'm sticking with my guns.

Most people think the lost ending where George Bailey has Potter cast into the Sarlacc pit is gratuitous. I beg to differ.
